The Hawai`i Teacher Standards Board has approved Kaho`iwai to deliver their Elementary Education program (K-6) from June 2, 2017. This means an opportunity for certification in either elementary or secondary programs as we move forward. Kaho‘iwai is a nationally accredited post-secondary teacher education program aimed at developing individuals into qualified educators of Hawaiian children. Focused on cultural values and an integrated approach to learning that includes rich clinical experiences, residential place-based learning opportunities and online coursework, graduates are prepared for teaching opportunities in various settings and are qualified to apply for licensure in the State of Hawai’i.
Accepting application for cohort V to begin in April 2018
Kaho`iwai is seeking Native Hawaiian and other applicants for four new teacher education cohorts starting 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. The program focuses on secondary English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Hawaiian Studies. Successful applicants will be provided with scholarship for the programs. Applicants require an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution and a desire to work in Hawaiian Focused Charter Schools. Kahoˋiwai Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program, which is designed to produce graduates who demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and values to meet the needs of Native Hawaiian children in education, has been granted initial accreditation by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) for a period of five years, from June 24, 2013 – June 24, 2018. Kaho`iwai is the first program in Hawai`i to received TEAC accreditation.
The Hawaii Teacher Standards Board approved Kaho`iwai as a State Approved Teacher Education Program through to 24 June 2018.
